What Happens When Bitcoin Mining Difficulty Increases?

For fixed hashrate and unchanged reward per block, uptime and fees, expected gross BTC production varies inversely with difficulty. A 20% increase means dividing production by 1.20, not subtracting 20%.

Difficulty is not a payout forecast

Bitcoin adjusts its proof-of-work target every 2,016 blocks toward an approximately two-week interval. Blocks arrive probabilistically. The developer guides explain network work and pool distribution; a GoMining payout also depends on provider rules. Documents checked 14 October 2026.

Reproduce the 20% example

Fictional inputs: 100 TH, gross 100 sats/TH/day, BTC USD 100,000, all-in maintenance USD 4.00/day, no reinvestment and 30 unchanged days. After difficulty +20%, expected production becomes 83.333333… sats/TH/day, a 16.666667% reduction. Keep calculation precision; round only displayed results.
100 ÷ 1.20 = 83.333333… (1 − 1 ÷ 1.20) × 100 = 16.666667%

Net income can fall faster than gross

Base gross is 0.00010000 BTC/day, worth USD 10.00; after USD 4.00 fees, USD 6.00/day remains, or 0.00180000 BTC over 30 days. Difficulty +20% gives USD 8.333333… gross and USD 4.333333… surplus/day: 0.00130000 BTC over 30 days. Net surplus falls 27.777778%, although gross falls only 16.666667%.
100 × 83.333333… ÷ 100,000,000 = 0.0000833333… BTC (0.00010000 ÷ 1.20 − 4 ÷ 100,000) × 30 = 0.00130000 BTC

Test both directions and a fee shortfall

Difficulty −20%: gross rises 25%, giving USD 12.50 gross, USD 8.50 surplus/day and 0.00255000 BTC over 30 days. Difficulty +50%: USD 6.666667 gross, USD 2.666667 surplus/day and 0.00080000 BTC. Difficulty +20% combined with BTC USD 40,000: gross USD 3.333333… cannot fund USD 4.00 fees; the 30-day unfunded gap is USD 20, with zero retained BTC. These are immediate, constant stresses, not forecasts.
1 ÷ 0.80 = 1.25 (4 − 0.00010000 ÷ 1.20 × 40,000) × 30 = 20 USD

Use dated production and avoid double counting

If a measured production rate already reflects current difficulty, do not apply the same historical change again. Match gross rewards to TH present on each day; net payouts are not gross production. Model future changes separately. Halvings, transaction rewards, pool fees/luck, downtime, maintenance and provider distribution may change together. USD BTC price affects fee coverage, not proof-of-work difficulty by itself. Review production and maintenance assumptions in Day Two+ or the free Horizons demo; reading a guide changes no saved inputs and executes nothing.
